In a nutshell
In a nutshell
Mathieu Weemaels, Belgian painter and pastellist, born in 1967. Lives and works in Brussels.
Although it is mainly figurative, the work of Mathieu Weemaels has an abstract dimension both in form: search for radical compositions, and in substance: silence, solitude, contemplation.
The starting point of most of his paintings is in the closed world of his studio. They are simple everyday objects. Candles, jacket hanging from a nail, fabrics, tables, papers, fruit, flowers…..
Mirrors are a frequent feature of his compositions. The real reflected here is like a window to another possible reality, another world at hand.
While most of his paintings and pastels are compositions with various objects, the field of the human figure is also present in a series of nudes that have evolved over time.
Landscapes and urban landscapes constitute a third major category.

In January 2019: thanks to an incredible Crowdfunding, I was able to publish a quality 208 page book on my work. It’s my whole journey there.
